The scorching, dry local weather is fantastic conditions for manufacturing of high quality red-wine grapes. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cab blends account for many of the top reds produced within the Stellenbosch space followed by Shiraz, Pinotage and Merlot. The Cool breeze from the ocean in False Bay creates a nice local weather for growing white grapes. Chenin Blanc is the most typical cultivar and many award profitable Chardonnays are made in Stellenbosch. This purple grape was  created in Stellenbosch in 1925 by Prof Abraham Perold at Stellenbosch University.
